A journey in the field of adult entitled dependency
Families with adults showing entitled dependency struggle with numerous, highly complex challenges. The therapeutic process is often unpredictable. Reflecting on these challenges for the family and for the therapist can help us address key questions: How do we keep ourselves from simplification or derailing from a therapeutic position to that of an ‘expert’? How do the ethics and methods of NVR translate into such a collaboration?
This workshop offers an in depth look into a single case therapeutic process within the field of adult entitled dependency. The story is still undefined, as this case is yet to unfold. I have recently started to work with Leonard and Charlotte, the parents of Daniel, aged 37, who is struggling with chronic addiction and an eating disorder. Many earlier attempts of treatment have failed, and for the last seven years Daniel has refused all help. Over the years, he has deteriorated significantly, living highly isolated in his room. In this situation, Leonard and Charlotte experience a sense of relational and moral paralysis where they feel distress and are subject to coercion while they try to hold on to their parental values. They’ve become highly isolated as well, making their efforts disappear in the family’s seclusion.
You will be invited to reflect on the feedback from Leonard and Charlotte on several moments in the course of this process. But regardless of any outcomes, my aim is to open up a shared learning space for what I think are important topics for therapists working in the field of NVR: careful consideration, the experience of support, creativity and resilience. Where we lose it. Where we find it. Where we try.
