From Fear to Trust to Cooperation – Building a new concept for Authority

From Fear to Trust to Cooperation – Building a new concept for Authority
In our individualistic Western culture, all forms of authority have become questionable. We don’t believe in God anymore; we doubt the authority of science and most of us realized that even Google don’t know everything… No wonder that during the last decade we are witnessing a sharp rise in children’s anxiety and fears. Where there is no trust in authority, fears flourish and as a result avoidance, alienation and aggression become a daily routine for children.
The essence of the New Authority concept stated a need to create a new form of Authority rejecting most parts of the old traditional one. This incentive was partly presented in the title of the German translation of the book „Stärke statt Macht“. But shouldn’t authority figure be powerful and use ‘Macht’ sometimes? And do we need to reject the old authority in order to rebuild a new one? The way we can combine our traditional authority and the pillars of the new authority will be the heart and soul of this lecture. Through case examples and short clips, ideas and tools for authority figures how to lead a community based on trust and cooperation, will be demonstrated. We will learn how the old African tradition of – “it takes a village to raise a child” can be revived in our western culture of WhatsApp groups in smartphones. We will demonstrate how NVR tools help educators to use ‘Macht’ but in legitimate and constructive ways and will learn how directors in youth care can empower their teams in front of violence.
Parents, educators and directors of residential settings will find out how acting as a (new) authority figure can renew a community spirit, overcome individual fears and bolster the feeling of belonging of children and adults alike.
