Connecting authority, a new vision on relations

Connecting authority, a new vision on relations
The introduction of nonviolent resistance in the field of family therapy and parent counseling did not only give hope to desperate parents in high conflict situations and concrete interventions to therapists, but also led to a new vision on relations and on the issue of authority, with connection -instead of topdown hierarchy- as its core quality. In this lecture I will focus on the importance of building constructive alliances with parents and families and discuss how the pillars of ‘connecting authority‘, based on NVR and systemstheory, are valuable guidelines that can serve as an anchor to the therapist in creating and maintaining alliances, even in the most challenging familyconflicts. Instead of imposing whatever therapy- or parenting-model (which is meant to be helpful, but often is not), first of all we have to listen to their suffering and needs, really meet them and connect instead of correct: from fear to trust to cooperation. The most precious gift to children is truly supporting and empowering their parents.
